Guro masks appear to be of two general types.
One type is usually elongated, very colorful
and has stylized animals or parts of animals on top or bottom of the faces.
They are very pleasing to look at and the type of animal on top has some
significance with respect to different ceremonies and festivals.
The second type of mask is smaller and may
depict an actual person. It was made to honor the person. Masks may have
been worn on the face, head or carried. Such masks are characterized by
narrow, well-proportioned faces, small chins and high foreheads, lowered
eyelids, narrow nose and delicate nostrils. Scarification and elaborate
coiffure are considered favorable attributes. Most often these are "danced"
solely for amusement.
The masks we have were purchased for us in
Africa and were not made for commercial sale but personal use. As such they
may show signs of age and wear. Our art dealer has carefully selected these
items from many others which are less well crafted and designed.
While masks can be obtained for all prices
we pride ourselves on offering unique and very special pieces. These masks
are estimated to be at least more than 20 years old. Each mask is unique.
Once you have seen a few guro masks it is
easy to recognize their style, yet they are all so different that you will
want to see more.
Heavenly smell of burnt wood (when you examine
the unfinished back). Amazing!
